Health Vacation at JNI - Day 1

Day 1

You are expected to reach JNI before 11 AM on your first day. Keeping that in mind we booked the cab for 8.30 AM from Marathalli as our first pickup was from there. Next myself and Mahesh got picked-up  from Koramangla. We took NICE road so that we avoid going thru traffic and can reach JNI as per expected time. It took about 1 hour 30 minutes from Marathalli to JNI.

At the main gate of JNI campus, we were asked to keep our luggage in the visitors room and were asked to meet the coordinators at the reception. The registration was very systematic and smooth. AT the main gate security, they have a list of all the patients supposed to join every day. We met the counselors who helped us initiate the joining formalities. While we were completing the joining formalities, we were served welcome drink, Tender Coconut water. It was really refreshing and I was thinking that why people write so much on food in JNI, not knowing fully what’s in store for next ten days. After completing the joining formalities, we made the payment (based on your number of days they have already calculated rough figure and they charge you on that basis, but will refund if you don’t use facilities for what you have been charged) and met the PRO who explained all rules and regulations. After that we met the Naturopath Doctor for initial checkup and discussions. Once initial registration is done, you will be given a tour of the facility in a buggy and dropped to your rooms. After keeping our luggage in the rooms we proceeded back to the registration counter to complete the rest of the formalities. Usually the lunch time is until 12 noon only, but it was our first day and hence were given liberty to have lunch around 12.30 pm as it took us some time to complete the formalities. While completing the formalities, they will check your BMI, weight, fat % etc and record in your file.
After completing all the registration formalities, we proceeded for lunch. So far whatever expectation was set by Gopal and others on food I found the food to be good on the contrary. Except for less salt and spice’s the food was extremely good. I anyways don’t need extra or much salt and eat less spicey food so it was like home food for me. The menu included two soups – almond soup and tomato/basil soup (you can take only one bowl), Ragi dosa, 1 chapati, kofta curry, cabbage vegetable, bottle guard curry, mixed raita (one or two tea spoon only), one spoon salad, onions, lemon and three varieties of chutney. We had butter milk as well which had mint and garlic paste mixed in it, but it was very refreshing and good.

After finishing our food, we had some gap of about 45 minutes as that’s the lunch time for the staff. One the first day, we had to meet four different Doctors- Naturopathy, Physiotherapy, Acupuncturist and Chief Yoga Officer., starting at 2 PM. First met the Naturopath Doctor who recorded all our problems and issues and based on the problem or diseases she prescribed treatments for next day. This is the usual practice, you meet the doctor every day and based on your symptoms and problems the doctor will prescribe the treatments for next day. Then I met the acupuncturist, she prescribed seven days treatment. However my acupuncturist wanted to review my blood test reports which were to be done next day before she started the treatment. Next I met the physiotherapist and he performed some tests to see and check which bones or joints have problem in it. I didn't understand much of it but did as required and completed ECG next after meeting the physiotherapist. The actual physiotherapy will start the next day, for seven days. I still had some time before I could meet the yoga officer for yoga consultation. So, instead of waiting there thought of completing my first treatment for the day. Mud Pack Eye Pack or MPEP in short would be the first treatment every day for next 10 days.
EYE PACK
They put mud pack (pack of mud as the name suggests) on your eyes and abdomen. This was just for 15 minutes but is said that it will absorb all heat from your eyes and abdomen.

Post this it was time for first juice after lunch, quickly reached ‘Gazeebo’ the place where they serve juices. Remember, when you meet he Naturopath Doctor, they will give you a card which carries information on what treatment is advised to you along with your food and juice recommendations. You don’t get anything else and you don’t get anything extra or different. The quantity and items are fixed and it’s all based on your Doctors recommendations (Insert Picture). I was advised Aloevera juice today, in normal terms you won’t call it a juice but a medicine that you need to take (a glass full of medicine)  process but it wasn't that bad either. I have tried Aloe Vera juice earlier (my friend bought it for me from his last visit to JNI), so I was aware and knew the taste of the juice. The next treatment for the day was Enema. With this treatment they would clear your intestines and ensure you have good bowel movement. They use Neem water for this. With the help of a small rubber tube and some gel, they will insert the pipe in your anus. The process is same like administering glucose in patient, the only difference is they do it thru anus and use neem water instead of glucose. It takes about a minute or 2 to Completely empty the water in your anus.

ENEMA - Picture for representation purpose only
As soon as they start the process you feel the pressure building up and once the process is over and they have completely drained water in your anus, within few minutes you start feeling the pressure. They are well aware of the process and its hazards as well and hence have separate toilets /rest room for each Enema patients. Now all you have to do is whatever program they have uploaded in your system (Neem water), you go to the rest room and download and release all the content and empty your bowels. This process is repeated at least 4-5 times during your 10 day stay. So for first time, it would be inconvenient and embarrassing. Inconvenient because a rubber tube is inserted in your anus and embarrassing cause the person administering the treatment is watching your naked ass, its shape, size, color I mean everything. However, they are all professionals and have been doing this for many-many years. For you it’s probably first time but for them its 1000th time or may be 10,000th time. . All the employees there are very professional and have been working there for at least 5-6 years, there are some who have been with the institute from the day it started. It  was a different experience and little difficult to explain, but you will feel the difference and will feel very light as if you have shredded 5-6 kgs in this process. As I mentioned they are professionals and I would say you treat them like doctors as they are the ones performing all treatments and procedures on you.

After this I went to meet the chief yoga officer and he advised different yoga exercises for different ailments. After meeting the yoga officer I finished another treatment which included abdominal and stomach message with mustard oil and then applying hot and cold pack which lasted for about 45 minutes. By the time I finished that it was 5.30 PM and almost no time for last yoga session. Hence, instead of doing Yoga I went for walk at the reflexology track.

Reflexology Track (Picture courtesy JNI website)

Reflexology, as the name suggests, is the application of appropriate pressure to specific points and areas on the feet. These pressure points correspond to different body organs and systems, and by walking in the reflexology track has a beneficial effect on the organs and person’s general health. The track consists of three tracks. The first track is filled with marbles or stones (pebbles), second track is filled with gravel and the third track is filled with three sets of hot and cold water.  By the time I started my friends also joined me at the track for walk. After finishing our walk at reflexology track, we completed our last walk for the day before dinner. The walking track is about 2.5 kms long and consists of a combination of cemented track and mud track. Along side the walking track, there is a lake, you have vegetable and fruits garden, beautiful green track and coconut trees lined up. The track is not only good for walking but very serene for your eyes and mind as well. The dinner starts at 5.30 PM and closes at 7 PM. After finishing our walk, we headed straight for dinner as it was already close to 6.30 PM and in no way I wanted to miss my dinner. In dinner, we got 2 chapatis, one serving of cow peas (or Lobhia), reddish vegetable along with Cottage cheese (Paneer) and mushroom curry. We also had two varieties of chutney (one spoon each) and mixed raw salad (only couple of tea spoons are allowed). This was almost the end of the day. There was a cultural program organized and coordinated by the patients from 7.15 PM but I was least interested and so were my friends. We decided to skip that and headed straight to our rooms. I wanted to write and capture all the events during my stay at JNI so that I can write on my blog and this was the starting for me today. However, before starting my write up I thought of talking to my wife and kids who were equally excited to know how the day went and what all we did in the day and how was the food etc. They had unlimited questions and I can understand their inquisitiveness and tried answering all their questions. More than food or anything else, I was missing my family and talking to them was good. They were equally missing me. Around 8.30 PM we get a glass of milk (soya milk) with jiggery along with a piece of bread. The milk didn’t taste like milk and the bread…..well what did you expect? Remember, all things you get at JNI might not be tasty but they are definitely healthy and so I don’t think too much on the taste, just eat it and enjoy.

You meet different people from different places. You keep bumping into each other at various places, be it the treatment center, on lunch tables, at the physiotherapy center, while walking or in the morning while doing kriyas or yoga. The funniest thing is, most likely the conversation’s starts with “for how many days you have been here” followed by the next usual question (usual if you have been there for some days), did you finish your colon? Funniest because as soon as you pose the question “have you done your colon  or CHT (colon hydro therapy) a cheeky smile comes on people’s faces. You might be wondering what is so funny about CHT. Well, read on to know more on Colon or CHT and what do they do in CHT treatment.

By the time I finished recording day one, it was already 10 PM and we were ready to hit the bed, not because we were tired but because the day start early next day, at 5 AM and hence if you don’t sleep early you won’t be able to wake up on time. Time is the most precious thing there, if you don’t manage your time well you will not be able to take the maximum benefit and miss out one of more thing. Tomorrow starts the actual day and some new treatments and some questions like are you done with your CHT? J
